Model History The Toyota Starlet has been produced in
various guises, but ultimately, the reasoning remained the same throughout its
production. To produce a lightweight,
turbo-charged vehicle that could satisfy the ever increasing ‘hot-hatch’
market. The turbo-charged Starlet range
has seen 3 different body styles, and 7 overall revisions. The following information details the
changes, starting with the most recent:
Glanza V EP91 (1998 -1999) This version uses the 4E-FTE 1331cc engine,
producing 133bhp @ 6400rpm. The car
features a full bodykit, comprising of a front spoiler with integrated driving
lamps, sideskirts, and a wrap-around rear spoiler. A revision in 1998 included a re-styled front
bumper, clear front indicators, revised rear light clusters and a more
up-to-date interior. Inside, the
impressive specification includes a Drivers Airbag, ABS, Power Steering, Manual
Climate Control & Air Conditioning, Electrically adjustable and retractable
Door Mirrors, Power Windows and Central Door Locking. Some cars have a different heating/air
conditioning layout on the dashboard (either a manual dial or electronic push
buttons). White dials and a progressive
turbo gauge (a series of lights indicate the stage of the turbos boost)
complete the sporty theme. A ‘dual-mode’
turbo setting via a button on the dashboard allows the driver to switch between
2 factory preset boost levels, offering 115bhp on low boost and 133bhp on high
setting. A limited, lightweight edition
is also available, which foregoes some ‘creature comforts’ such as ABS,
Electric Windows etc. The car is
available with automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual. Due to its ability to keep up with cars from
a higher class, the Japanese nicknamed the Glanza, ‘The Flyer’.
Glanza V EP91 (1995 -1997) Introduced in February 1995, this version
again uses the same 4E-FTE engine, again producing 133bhp @ 6400rpm. Specification is the same as the above model,
but features a less aggressive front bumper, different rear light clusters and
a different interior. Features the
‘dual-mode’ turbo setting, and is available with automatic transmission or a
5-speed manual.
Glanza S EP91 (1995 -1999) The Glanza S is basically a non-turbo
version of the above vehicle. Exterior
wise, the bodywork is identical to the Glanza V, with the 1998-1999 models
benefiting from the face-lifted bumpers, clear front indicators, rear light
clusters and revised interior, and the 1996-1997 versions receiving the less
aggressive bumpers. The S version does
not have the air intake on the bonnet (as there is no turbo, it is
unnecessary), and some cars do not have sideskirts. Basically, the S version is an ‘insurance
friendly’ version of the Glanza V.
Again, available with automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual.
Starlet GT EP82 (1990 -1995) Different body style to the Glanza range (EP91),
but very much the same ethos. Uses the
4E-FTE engine, producing approximately 130bhp.
There were 4 different revisions to this range, the most noticeable
being the model with a twin-headlight arrangement. The other revisions generally focused upon
the introduction of better quality materials and specification (ABS, Airbag,
Air Conditioning etc). Approximate
weight of the car was 860kgs. Again,
features the ‘dual-mode’ turbo setting.
Turbo S EP71 (1987 -1990) Again, featuring a different body style to
the model that replaced it, the Turbo S was the first turbo-charged Starlet
that
